How to write text

There are various ways of entering text when you write notes or messages. Follow these instructions to learn how to write text.

Introduction
Text input is used in many of the device functions, such as notes and messages. The following steps require that you're writing text and that the keypad is visible.
Select text input settings
There are a number of different text input settings. The most important settings are described in the following steps.
Choose one of the following options:
Select keypad type, go to 2a.
Select writing language, go to 2b.
Change writing language, go to 2c.
Turn predictive text input for the Samsung keypad on or off, go to 2d.
Turn word suggestion on or off, go to 2e.
2a - Select keypad type
Press the keypad type icon.
Press Android keyboard, Samsung keypad or Swype.
Android keyboard and Samsung keypad are keypads with one letter on each key.
Swype is a keypad where slide your finger across the keys instead of pressing them.
2b - Select writing language
Press the keypad type icon.
Press Configure input methods.
To select writing language for the Swype keypad:
Press Settings.
Press Language.
Press the required language to turn it on or off.
When the box next to a language is ticked (V), it's turned on.
To select writing language for the Android™ keypad:
Press Active input methods.
Press Use system language or the required language to turn it on or off.
When the box next to a language is ticked (V), it's turned on.
To select writing language for the Samsung keypad:
Press Settings.
Press Input language.
Press the required language to turn it on or off.
When the box next to a language is ticked (V), it's turned on.
Press the return icon the necessary number of times to return to text input.
The selected language determines which characters are available and the language used for word suggestion.
2c - Change writing language
To change language for the Swype keypad:
Press the language icon (a globe) to change language.
To change language for the Android™ keypad:
Press the keypad type icon.
Press the required language.
To change language for the Samsung keypad:
Press the language icon (a globe) to change language.
The selected language is briefly displayed.
2d - Turn predictive text input for the Samsung keypad on or off
Press the settings icon.
Press XT9 to turn the function on or off.
When the box next to the menu item is ticked (V), the function is turned on.
Press the return icon to go back to text input.
2e - Turn word suggestion on or off
Press the keypad type icon.
Press Configure input methods.
To turn word suggestion for the Swype keypad on or off:
Press Settings below Swype.
Press Word suggestion.
Press Word suggestion to turn word suggestion on or off:
When the box next to the menu item is ticked (V), the function is turned on.
To turn word suggestion for the Android™ keypad on or off:
Press Settings below Android keyboard.
Press Show correction suggestions.
Press Always show, Show on portrait mode or Always hide.
To turn word suggestion for the Samsung keypad on or off:
Press Settings below Samsung keypad.
Press XT9 advanced settings.
Press Word completion to turn word suggestion on or off:
When the box next to the menu item is ticked (V), the function is turned on.
Press the return icon the necessary number of times to return to text input.
If you turn on word suggestion, words are suggested as you key in the first letters.
Before you can turn on word suggestion for the Samsung keypad, you need to turn on predictive text input in step 2d.
How to write text
The following steps describe how to use the different keypad types when dictionary and word completion are turned on.
Choose one of the following options:
Use Android™ keypad, go to 3a.
Use the Samsung keypad, go to 3b.
Use the Swype keypad, go to 3c.
3a - Use the Android™ keypad
Press once on each letter to write the required word.
A number of words based on the letters you've keyed in are displayed.
Move your finger over the suggested words for more results.
Press the required word to insert it.
To key in numbers or symbols:
Press ?123.
Press the required number or the required symbol.
If required, press More to see more symbols.
Press ABC to return to text input.
3b - Use the Samsung keypad
Press once on each letter to write the required word.
A number of words based on the letters you've keyed in are displayed.
Press arrow down to see more words.
Press the required word to insert it.
To key in numbers or symbols:
Press 123.
Press the required number or the required symbol.
If required, press 1/3 to see more symbols.
Press ABC to return to text input.
3c - Use the Swype keypad
Press the first letter of the required word and slide your finger, without lifting it, across all the letters in the word.
Lift your finger after the last letter.
A number of words based on the letters you've keyed in are displayed.
Move your finger over the suggested words for more results.
Press the required word to insert it.
To key in a number or symbol:
Press and hold the key with the required number or the key with the required symbol until the number or symbol is displayed.
To key in more numbers:
Press 123.
Press the required number.
Press ABC to return to text input.
To key in more symbols:
Press =#&.
Press the required symbol.
If required, press 1/2 to see more symbols.
Press ABC to return to text input.
